When I think of a classic southern Thanksgiving, I immediately think Simple Southern Sweet Potato Casserole! This holiday classic is the perfect mix of sweet and savory and is the perfect side dish for any Thanksgiving table!
Because my family was split between Mississippi and PA, we used to spend every other Thanksgiving with my Mamaw in Mississippi. This meant every other Thanksgiving was filled with deep fried turkeys and sweet potatoes. I am not sure if it is just a southern thing, but I always felt as though my Mississippi family just had a greater appreciation for the sweet potato. Whereas my PA family table was always filled with pumpkin pies and pineapple casseroles, the Mississippi table is where I first discovered my love for all things sweet potato. Between sweet potato pie, mashed sweet potatoes and, of course, sweet potato casserole, to me the sweet potato has always been a southern holiday staple.
When you think of sweet potato casserole one word usually comes to mind, marshmallows. Well I am here to tell you that in typical Mamaw fashion this particular sweet potato casserole is not THAT kind of sweet potato casserole. Instead this sweet and savory take on the classic incorporates a variety of fall flavors including tart apples, and toasty brown sugar, and of course, it wouldn’t be a southern holiday classic without a little savory sausage!
Because this casserole is both sweet and savory it is a great way to bring sweet potatoes to your Thanksgiving table without being overly sweet. It pairs well with all your Thanksgiving favorites like stuffing (or filling), green bean casserole, and of course turkey!
While it may not be your traditional sweet potato casserole, this dish is sure to be a crowd pleaser. With only 4 ingredients you can have it on the table in less than an hour! That way you have plenty of time to enjoy it just how mamaw intended, around the table with those you love!
Who doesn’t love Thanksgiving leftovers? Lucky for you this scrumptious side dish can be stored in an airtight container and saved in the fridge for up to 5 days!
